Meet Your Trainers

All of our trainers are accomplished athletes in a variety of sports but most importantly for you they bring a wealth of professional and academic experience to their work as trainers.  They love what they do every day and it shows in their attention to detail, motivation and effective leadership styles on the gym floor.

Courtenay McFadden

Although I have competed in both soccer and running, I have been competing on two wheels for the past several years.  In the Fall, I race professionally in North America (and sometimes Europe) in the sport of cyclocross. But when it comes to fun, the choice is usually my mountain bike. There is such a clear balance of effort and reward. Climbing to the top of a hill results in beautiful views followed by the rush of a singletrack descent! I love the physical & mental challenge of my sport. I am constantly learning about myself and using what I learn to improve my training for the next challenge.

Professional training was a natural choice for me. When I was a senior in high school I worked the front desk at a small gym on Mercer Island.  I knew I was going to head to Western for school and was trying to decide on a major.  Like many students, I thought about Psychology but after working at the gym, loving the environment and talking to one of the trainers I decided on something in the direction of human movement. I love teaching others about how the body can adapt to training and helping to make a difference in their everyday lives.  I have been teaching Group Fitness for 10 years and personal training for 8 years. (ACE, AFAA, BSc in Exercise Science, MSc in Human Movement & Performance)

Jackie Lind

Jackie Lind knows a thing or two about training and has been working as a trainer and group exercise instructor since the late 1990’s. Jackie brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our team.  You will love her positive energy and the fun vibe she brings to all the workouts she leads!

Derek Shiers

I have spent much of my professional life coaching people and helping them develop a strong knowledge base. Years managing a large territory of our northwestern states and Western Canada, I have firsthand experience balancing a career with the training demands of competitive sport. I came to fitness training because I love applying my knowledge, training and sense of humor in guiding others to reach their fitness potential.

With an amateur bike racing career spanning twenty years I have been fortunate to race road, cyclocross, XC and Enduro at an expert level here in North America and in Europe. as well as Ski to Sea locally (naively choosing the downhill run leg, much to the relief of my teammates)! If I’m not on one of my bicycles, you’re likely to see me running trails with the dogs or heading out for a ski.

Who has time to spin their wheels at a gym? I believe in spending as much time outside as possible, but I know that I need to workout to stay strong, especially as I age. I don’t have time to get injured and I want to be strong for my sports. I want your workouts to be functional, fun and fast.

Nicola Mann

Before moving to Bellingham I was co-owner of Body & Soul Health and Fitness in Vancouver, BC (Vancouver’s largest studio). With several personal training certifications (ACE, ACSM, BCRPA) and 20 years of professional training experience, I expanded my knowledge base from competitive cycling and took a certification as a USCF Expert Level cycling coach & and run both group and individual mountain bike workshops each year.

In fact, it was the outdoor lifestyle that brought us to Bellingham and I am determined to enjoy all the adventure it has to offer. I also realize that I have one body for this life and it allows me to do more when I keep it healthy. I have experienced myself the beneficial effects of strength training on my sports performance, whether it’s on the bike, skis or trails. I love sharing what I have learned about functional training over the years and the benefits of the targeted workouts we have created at Trailhead.
